How to Rent a PO Box

A PO Box (short for “Post Office” Box) is an option for individuals who do not want certain mail delivered to a physical mailing address. Not only can it be more secure as a key is needed to access the contents, you may also receive your mail much earlier in the day than you would with standard residential delivery. If you are looking to rent a PO Box for the first time, the USPS has an online application form you may complete.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need

  • Printer
    • 1

Visit the “PO Boxes Online” section of the USPS website (see Resources).

    • 2

Enter either your address, city and state or zip code into the corresponding fields. Click “Search.”

    • 3

Scroll through the list and find the location you wish to rent a PO box at.

    • 4

Select the PO box size you wish to rent and the desired duration of your rental. You may choose to rent a PO box for 6 or 12 months at a time.

    • 5

      Click “Continue.”

    • 6

Log in to your USPS account, if you have one, or create a new account. To create a new account, click “Sign Up” and provide the requested information. You will be asked to provide a username, password and an answer to a security question. You will also need to enter your physical mailing address, phone number and email address.

    • 7

Complete the “Apply for a PO Box” form. The information will automatically be filled with the information you entered when you created your account. If anything needs to be changed, edit the corresponding fields.

    • 8

Add additional users under the “Additional Box Users.” If you do not wish to allow access to the PO box to any other individual, skip this step.

    • 9

Review the “Privacy Act Statement” and check the box next to “I have read the Privacy Act Statement.” Click “Submit.”

    • 10

Enter your credit card information. Click “Continue.”

    • 11

Wait for the payment to process. Once complete, you will be shown a confirmation screen.

    • 12

      Print the displayed form.

    • 13

Pick up your keys for your PO box from the post office you are renting it at. Be sure to bring the printed form and photo identification, such as a state-issued identification card or driver’s license.
